Profile - Jaggit Hayer
My career started with West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service (WMFS) in September 1986, when I joined the Control Room as a Fire Control Operator (FCOp). I wanted a career that would be exciting, interesting, different and give me a great sense of satisfaction. I can honestly say, that I feel, still to this day, I made the right choice. Working in an emergency environment, in the very heart of the organisation, is very rewarding in knowing that your actions and contribution has made a difference to someone’s life. Additionally, I love the fact that within the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) there is a great sense of camaraderie between all stakeholders involved. During my service with WMFS, I undertook promotional exams and was consequently promoted to the role of a Leading Fire Control Operator (LFCOp).
In 1991 I transferred to Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS), where I worked in the Command and Control, initially as a FCOp and then was promoted to a LFCOp; this role is now referred to as a Crew Manager.
From 2003 until September 2009, I left the Command and Control, and undertook a number of different workstreams within DFRS: Recruitment/Outreach/Positive Action, Multi-Faith Project work, Community Safety, Road Traffic Collision Reduction, Business Continuity, Anti-Social Behaviour Reduction. Additional to this work, I have undertaken multi-faith and equality and diversity work through various internal forums, as well as attending and contributing to this agenda locally, regionally and nationally.
I rejoined my colleagues in the Command and Control, as part of the Control Management Team at the end of September 2009.
My career in the Fire and Rescue Service has now brought me into my 24th year of service. I have seen and undergone many changes to the face of the FRS and look forward to further contributing to the FRS’s equality and diversity workstream through my role within AFSA. I want to help AFSA to be a force for positive change. I want us to be recognised and respected for the work we do, which I am sure will remain at the high quality that has been produced to date.
